- Out of the Hebrew sacrificial system, Christian application is made of the lamb as the
symbol of Jesus. John the Baptist said of him, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the
sin of the world" (John 1:29) Similiar references is made in the book of Revelation and the
great prayers and hymns of the Church, such as "O Lamb of God" "Crown him with Many Crowns"
"O Lamb of god, Still Keep Me"
Sometimes the lamb carries a resurrection banner, or white pennant with a red cross on a
cruciform standard. The white pennant represents the body of Christ which is attached
to the cruciform staff, representing the cross on which the Lamb died and through which
the risen Christ saves the world. When the lamb is depicted lying down it symbolizes the
suffering and burden-bearing Christ, on whom the Lord laid "the iniquity of us all" (Isa 53:6)
In this presentation the Lamb is on a scroll with the Seven Seals of the Book of Revelation.
(Rev 5:1 to 8:17)
